So you have a terrific story, film, product, service or some other exciting offering that you want to advertise. But you don’t just want to create an ordinary commercial with a cost/benefit argument of some kind. You want to promise thrills- with thrills. You need a teaser video. To create a teaser video, you will need to be competent with your video editing software. Your cuts and transitions will need to be very precise in order to render the proper effect and to stay within the necessary time constraints. You will naturally also have to have the best equipment you can lay hands on. The amount of clips, effects, and layers that most teasers need will require a lot from your gear. Show your audience that you will deliver the goods within three seconds. Whether it’s tension, arousal, joy, fear or whatever- make sure the emotional quality of your product comes through like gangbusters instantly. Finish, equally emotionally intense terms, but with a sense of incompleteness... what’s missing? Your product advertised, naturally.
Jesse Ventura didn’t have time to bleed and neither do you. Use words and text very sparingly. Give them a taste, not an argument.
Everything else will fall down if your cuts are not tight and right on the money. Nothing must go to waste.
Using a series of quick-cut images and clips necessitates some top quality voice talent. Once you’ve written the voiceover script, you need a voice actor with the right tenor for your subject matter. Watch a few trailers to get a feel for what you need. Be ready to hire a local actor.
Whatever the topic and content of your product, it should be represented as an ultimate state for the genre. Characters should be a bit jaded and possess the courage of their convictions. If they do something exciting in your trailer, they should do it with supreme confidence. The events portrayed should have an element of inevitability.
Whatever you do, make it thrilling, enjoyable, or hilarious. If the trailer is not fun, how could your feature possibly be? Make it fun or pack it in.
